It is impossible to understand contemporary Sicily without knowing

the island transforming its landscape and people but never conquering its
independent spirit.
This triangular hunk of land jutting out from the tip of Italy's toe has
been the crossroads of the ancient world : Phoenicians, Carthaginians,
Geeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards and Bourbons have held the island,
all contributing to its rich artistic heritage.
